How Can I Prepare?
Depending upon the regulations under which you will be training, you may need obtain your medical certificate and student pilot certificate before you begin training. We strongly recommend you obtain your medical and apply for your student pilot certificate before meeting with your instructor regardless of whether you train under Part 141 or Part 61.
To obtain a FAA Medical Certificate, you will need to schedule a medical exam with an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Though only a 3rd class medical is needed to commence your training, we recommend you apply for a 1st or 2nd class medical to ensure you are able to obtain this if your goals extend beyond personal flying. You can locate an AME near you through a simple online search.
To start your student pilot certificate application, you will need to register for an account through the FAA’s Integrated Airman Certificate and Rating Application (IACRA) site. Check out their “New User Guide” link on the landing page if you’re new to IACRA. Your instructor can also help you navigate the site if you have trouble.
